In a stunning turn of events, an air traffic controller at a North Carolina Airport has been arrested on charges of possessing a weapon of mass destruction.
Police say they were contacted on Nov. 3 answering a 911 call related to a person possessing a homemade explosive device, which bomb squad agents determined was a homemade pipe bombTwo men have been charged with the making and possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were contacted on November 3 answering a 911 call related to a person possessing a homemade explosive device, which members of the CMPD bomb squad agents determined was a homemade pipe bomb.39-year-old Derrick Fells admitted to constructing the homemade pipe bomb with the purpose of using it against a neighbor with which there was an ongoing dispute. After making the bomb, Fells changed his mind about actually using it and gave it to 30-year-old Paul George Dandan. Dandan was a full-time employee of the Federal Aviation Administration working as an air traffic controller out of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Local police have confirmed that the device was not located at the airport but instead found at Dandan’s apartment.Airport officials issued a news release and stated of the events –
“The FAA employee only had access to the offsite air traffic control tower and had no access to the restricted areas of the terminal or ramp. He did not have access to any aircraft at the Airport.”
