Italy’s Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, has condemned the drive-by shooting spree targeting African immigrants, saying “hatred and violence will not succeed in dividing us.”
The six African immigrants were injured in the central Italian town of Macerata.
Police have arrested Luca Traini, a 28-year-old Italian man who had draped himself with an Italian flag and had been making a fascist salute.
Police said Traini had no previous criminal record and his motive for the shootings is unclear. He did stand as a far-right candidate for the Northern League in recent local elections, but he received no votes in the count.
